As one who stands at the gate and with doubtful hand draws aside the curtain and peers into the unknown, so we begin today by taking our first step across the threshold of a New Year. It is already a beautiful year, because it is another year of the Lord. Hence there are new blessings in store for us. Did not God ask Moses to bless his people in these words:
The Lord bless you and keep you: the Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you. — Numbers 6: 22
Of course, there will also be hills of difficulties on the way. But both hills and valleys are needed in our lives, as in any land. It is the hills that collect the rain for fruitful valleys. So, it is our experience on the hills of our difficulties that drives us to the throne of God's grace and bring down showers of blessings.
